Hitch Hits Cult Plans

Sussex Express 30 September 1994

Scientologists are still determined to move to Crowborough, despite
hundreds of churchgoers signing a protest petition.
But plans to base 500 members of the Church of Scientology at
Walshes Manor in Walshes Road suffered a setback on Tuesday.
The application for change of use was deferred at Wealden District
Council by the planning committee because councillors said they needed
more information.
Councillors were worried about the number of people on the
premises, kitchen facilities, social and safety issues.
After the meeting spokesman for the Scientologists, Margaret
Reese, said the questions could be answered and that they would be moving
to Crowborough.
[She] said they had been forced to have a school on the site
because of "religious bigotry" in Crowborough. She said it was needed to
protect the children from bullying.
