"Rapid dissemination can be attained...by the rehabilitation of celebrities who are just beyond, or just approaching, their prime" -L Ron Hubbard. Today we celebrate Ransom, and more especially its star Mel Gibson, as the last bastion against Scientology's creeping inroads into Hollywood. This week, the New York Times published Quigley's respected Top 150 list of influential movie stars: first equal are Tom Cruise (a Scientologist) and Gibson. Third is John Travolta (a Scientologist). Hubbard haters will cheer the decline in the US of Jerry Macguire (with Cruise, and Travolta's wife Kelly Preston -another Scientologist).

Newcomers are Clint Eastwood's Absolute Power (with Gene Hackman and Ed Harris) and the following, which may be judged by their taglines: Vegas Vacation ("This time the Griswolds are on a roll"); That Darn Cat ("I laughed so hard I coughed up furballs"- Socks, Clinton's cat) and Fools Rush In ("An impulsive love story")
