Diary

by Matthew Norman

With intrusion so powerful an issue, a paragraph in Friday's London
Evening Standard is intriguing. Headlined "Hollywood threat", it reports
that "three movie stars have declared war on the press, hiring private
detectives to delve into the lives of newspaper editors and photographers.
The mystery trio," who, it says, "accuse the press of killing Diana, are
putting their wealth behind the huge team of investigators to take on the
tabloids at their own game." The trio may be a mystery, but an informed
guess might include Tom Cruise and John Travolta - the former a guest at
the funeral, the latter famously a dance partner, and both voluble last
week about intrusion- and possibly Kirstie Alley. She was not in the Abbey
on Saturday; like the other two, however, she is a Scientologist. Readers
may recall that the Scientologists are behind Truth and Accuracy in the
Media (TAIM), a group dedicated to monitoring and punishing journalistic
misbehaviour. A caller reports finding details of those under surveillance
"down a back alley" on the Internet, but this we are so far unable to
locate. Any help in finding the page would be much appreciated.

[Note: they have now found the TAIM page. It's at
http://home.earthlink.net/taim/ ]
