Secret Lives, Ch4, 9pm

A new series begins with a subject rich in possibilities- the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard. This programme has already upset the Church of Scientology and it's easy to see why: if Secret Lives is to be believed, Hubbard was not only a fantasist who invented his life story as he went along, but dangerously ambitious, mentally unstable and capable of sadistic cruelty to those who offended him - like the four-year-old boy locked in the chain hold of Hubbard's ship for two days and nights. however, he founded a very successful cult that is now officially a "church" and remains a hugely rich and powerful organisation. Not bad for a man with a face hardly calculated to inspire trust.
